The Bassflow radio edit of Speak To Me is very special. Already a standout from the Roxette reunion album Charm School (review found here), I felt overall that the album sounded rushed in terms of production. Speak To Me is an uplifting ballad that plays on the band's strength: haunting verses from Per and Marie's unmistakably thorny groans that sound more expressive than ever. This new remix gives it an extra sheen that really sparkles, creating something most acts 25 years down the line almost never achieve - a career defining moment. Just, wow! Well done Roxette.

Roxette - Charm School (2011)

Marie Fredriksson is a woman, people. Her very female version of Everybody Hurts is called In My Own Way. She's no fool, but "now I'm a woman" is just naff and endearingly so. Before Cher threatens to sue, After All is actually one of Per's perpetual hardons for wanting to be in the Beatles. He's done this better (June Afternoon), and this is fine and everything (chirpy even) but it's not what I want dominating Roxette's comeback splash. Strong, dignifiedB and earthy, Happy On The Outside doesn't hurt at all - poised production and fussy emotions reach elegant heights, with a gorgeous piano refrain.

Roxette - She's Got Nothing On (But The Radio(
Roxette - She got nothing on (but the radio) from Mats Udd on Vimeo.
Not much to say ... it's not amazing is it? Recycling the same kind of sleazy riff as Girls On Film, this just isn't much of a Roxette track - in fact Marie hardly opens her gob until the subdued middle-8. Her vocal on the wooshy and wistful One Wish was awesome so we know she can do it, but I think the days of the chaffing-leather heat of Hotblooded have been bled dry. We shall see come the release of Charm School - as disappointed as I am by the first single, my excitement for the album has not diminished.

The Night Is So Pretty & So Young: The Return of Roxette

My first musical obsession Roxette are back next year with their new studio album Charm School due February 2011, preceded by a new single called She's Got Nothing On (But The Radio).

Roxette are one of the few bands I struggle to actually choose a favourite album from: 1991's Joryride quenches every possible thirst imaginable and represents the peak of their overproduced vigour and sheer over-the-speed-limit melodic untouchableness; 1989's Look Sharp! is almost disco and Marie's vocals have the power to heel (this is their LP with the strongest batch of album tracks); and both 1999's glossy Have A Nice Day and the fast delivery (who expected a new album after only 2 years?) of 2001's slightly more sombre Room Service got their sensibility and position just right, but neither ignored their fetish for eccentric adrenaline (Crush On You and You Make My Head Go Pop being prime examples). With anthems and tremorring power-ballads that shatter like glass, I can't wait for the promise of a return to their vintage sound - for me, their only wobbly moment was Crash! Boom! Bang! but even that had its moments (the cock-hungry Sleeping In My Car was a top ten near miss but nothing else had the same amount of fuel in the tank sadly). Anyway, perhaps expect a discogrpahy dissection over the next few weeks when I have more time beyond my studies.

Crush On You
Roxette Challenge Dannii To A Re-Release Off!

Roxette are eternally poignant and never fail to charm with their obsession for personal hand-shaking lyrics. If they return for one last hurrah I for one cannot wait.

Verging On The Obscene

The breathtaking and exquisite union between Marie Fredriksson's succulently soulful yet punky vocals and the ready-to-burst songwriting/production voltage from Per Gessle is a thing of unmatched melting beauty and splendour. Roxette's deft knack for a hypnotic and heartwelting ballad or punchy duck-for-cover pop meteorite has sustained an unparalleled, undiminished 20 year career that has been nothing if not consistent. Such robust versatility became clear circa 1999 witrh their "comeback" album of sorts Have A Nice Day - a sure-fire return to form. "It's hard to tell his gender" was an obscene observation suggesting the Scandinavian pair hunt in pairs for gender-specific sexual partners. Marie's agonising dance diva capabilities were effortlessly flaunted to jaw-dropping effect with the luminous and galacial storm Stars - an unflinchingly committed performance so dazzling, daring and dramatic it is impossible not to imagine her belting this one out from an icicle fortress full of kidnapped children forced to sing along on the album version. The Almighty Radio Edit is the post-0800 call to child services and elevates the song into an unequivocal dance anthem. The Todd Terry Tee's Radio Mix of the first single I WIsh I Could Fly follows the haunting lead of Fredriksson's sublime sigh. Taking the bait, it decorates her poised and commanding vocal, cushioning it with chic, sharp and sleek house beats whilst keeping the original's overlapping strings that already fold over you in deadly seduction. This remix fades not quite abruptly, rather it bows out gracefully before one last vocal delectation finally vanishes with all trace.
