Freak Asylum - Album Sampler Review (2012)

FREAK ASYLUM ALBUM TEASER MIX by freakasylum

Two well-established pros in the music business, Andy Lee and Kelly Llorenna, reinvent themselves as dance music’s new biggest threat Freak Asylum on their debut album Let The Madness Begin. The songs have a thrilling immediacy and their sense of all or nothing pays off in spades. Built on a sonic landscape of slick guitars and high-speed dance adrenaline, the music is slick, bulletproof and in hot pursuit of the charts.

With its knock-out chorus that’s as subtle as a tsunami, You Better Leave’s eager verses concentrate on a hostile romance: “and I’m scared, scared of what you’ll do to me” sounds more like a threat from Kelly and not the other way around.  Because it’s so stylish and well-pasted together, the sounds are rich and tightly constructed into unabashed hyper-pop with electronic underpinnings.

Scandalously charged opener Something To Say spits a furious F-you to the haters and recalls Garbage with its huge dirty guitar riff that practically licks you on the face, and it’s inescapable chorus. Kelly’s earthy vocals compete confidently with such a beast of a track. The rabid force doesn’t relent; an array of illuminating rock and electronica sounds all fuses together to create the album’s highest voltage.

The distinct sense of accessible pop song-craft of the gutter-glam Wasted is tinged with melancholia and a wistful yearning, the chorus is swirling and (yet again) anthemic to the nth degree. The perfect soundtrack to waking up in a police cell with bits of kebab and condom packets stuck in your hair.  We’ve all been there, no? Kelly's sensitive vocal control really showcases a more vulnerable side to her timbre, not to mention the gleaming production gloss. A serious single contender. I'm having palpitations for this one.
Future single Throwaway Girl is anything but disposable. Sultry and surly, think Rachel’s I Said Never Again, but with an 18 sticker.

Filth-fest Fetish oozes glamour from every pore: thrashing guitars, and Kelly’s cackling purr is fired up. The bursts of off-kilter momentum play to Kelly’s pugnacious strength, it’s the album’s loudest carnage. Snarling “yeah” sarcastically to the point of sounding violent.

Above: Kelly lezzing it up with a tranny, making lesbians wetter than Niagara Falls nationwide.
Draping the songs with guitars, the dance-injected pop-rock formula creates a brutal and bruising dancefloor experience, with many moments to admire. The songs are filled with hooks like it’s an addiction. Whatever they’re taking, Freak Asylum are well over the limit and will leave your ears ringing for more. The album’s consistency easily outmatches even the highest watermarks of either Kelly’s or Andy’s previous work.  Aggressively pitched towards the club, their throbbing arousal for high-impact melodies are defined by an unwavering commitment to every song. The robust production fizz kicks into gear at every turn and Kelly’s ‘Lola Leethal’ persona loses none of her trademark steel-reinforced vox, completely in her element amongst the 'madness' of thumping rhythms and the glam-soaked euphoria.  Do I sound like I love this or what?

Freak Asylum - Throwaway Girl (Second Music Video Completed)

Fan of the tan, Kelly Llorenna is really killing me. Her act Freak Asylum have already filmed two videos and not a single leak. The first single is called You Better Leave, and now pictures have surface for their second single's video called Throwaway Girl. Although I'm not really a fan of the lack of hot guys, Kelly (or is this Lola leethal pseudonym still happening?) does look like she should be pulling pints behind the Rovers Return (ie, amazing).

Get Ur Freak On

It's on kids, Freak Asylum have showcased some new pics from their new video. Happy 2011 K-Lo fans!

It's official, fan-of-the-tan Kelly Llorenna is into swinging. In fact, she says she's mad for it.

Lola’s Lazy Cow European Mini Tour

With K-Lo’s resurrection as bleached bombshell Lola Leethal causing shockwaves through the internet, sales in actual Shockwaves hair products have apparently went through the roof as young gays with gender issues have all shoplifted the styling range in an effort to get the Lola look. Meanwhile, the Freak Asylum siren has been avoiding the temptation of a recent Boots 2-for-1 deal on St. Tropez by flying out to Ibiza and Majorca to complete a hat-rick of promotional gigs in the space of 24 hours. K-Lo’s lack of effort is starting to worry me – could she not have fitted in a house call to the Obama’s?

Whilst we wait for more news, Diva Incarnate can exclusively reveal the names of 8, of a possible 13, album tracks:

FETISH

This is bound to be a flavorsome, just what kinks have these guys got to share with us?

YOU BETTER LEAVE - TOBY GAD WRITTEN SONG

Something tells me Lola isn’t about to get her ballad on with this one.

SOMETHING TO SAY

I really hope at least one of these tracks has the lyrics ‘laugh out loud’ as a reference to her fabulous and LOLtastic blog interviews.

YOU GOTTA LOVE ME

Dreamgirls meets Lola Leethal?

CONTAGIOUS - Peter Hook on Bass

Could Lola be about to dish the dirt on her recent Ibiza experiences with a song about STD’s? I certainly hope so.

Below: Kelly eggs on the gays at Doncaster Pride before petling a few lesbians with actual eggs who were giving her funny looks throughout her set.

THATS WHAT I HATE ABOUT YOU - Peter Hook on Bass

I love a good twisted lyric, and it’s about time we got something scornful from Kelly. With Peter Hook on bass there is almost guaranteed to be a euphoric trip tinged with pathos as with all the best New Order cuts.

WASTED

This could be my anthem of 2010 - hopefully this will a purge of all the tragic and fantastic acts we all shamefully commit whilst, yes, wasted.

UNCONSCIOUS

Part two to Wasted, much?

New Official Freak Asylum Pictures

Nothing surprises me about Kelly Llorenna anymore, not even if Freak Asylum were to cover Beyonce's Freakum Dress (which they should, if just for a 'buzz' single to generate interest via your something). Currently recording into the small hours of the night, here is a taster of what is to come with some new official snaps of Kelly vs Lola Leethal.

Below: Lola Leethal hasn't quite mastered the art of walking in heels yet.
Dance junkies Freak Asylum also promise to further explore the duality of Kelly's new persona in their first video. I hope they have a dance-off, or even a tan-off - it will be hair-extensions at dawn.

Kelly Llorenna Diva Incarnate Interview

With a voice more explosive than Afghanistan, Kelly Llorenna tells Diva Incarnate that she is ready to rock. Rock n' LOL that is. In K-Lo's most personal internet exchange since her ex N-Trance producer called the singer 'an old slag' on the official AATW messageboards, Llorenna wipes clean as Lola Leethal and fronts the new band Freak Asylum. She exclusively reveals her complex relationship with fake tan, her appreciation for Dannii Minogue and laughs off pretty much everything I had the balls to ask her. Freak Asylum are currently finishing a long-awaited debut album and announce their influences as Gwen Stefani, Pink, Korn and New Order. It was a pleasure to experience the Brighter Day belter get so enthusiastic, articulate and self-aware about her new material, and also be willing to not take herself or anybody else that seriously. One thing is confirmed: this bangers and mash-ups girl is a riot and a half.

Hi Kellz. I am really loving the new stuff - it seems to have given your infamously big voice a new lease of life. What brought on the exciting re-invention?

ITS SOMETHING I HAVE WANTED AND BEEN DOING FOR ALONG TIME NOW...JUST FELT THE TIME WAS RIGHT TO VENTURE OUT FROM THE TYPICAL DANCE STUFF I AM KNOWN FOR...MY "KELLY" DANCE FANS WILL STILL LOVE THIS NEW ALBUM,AS ITS STILL BIG SONGS,BIG BEATS,BIG SYNTHS AND GUITARS,JUST MORE POP/ROCK AND RADIO FRIENDLY...AND HAS GIVEN ME THE CHANCE TO USE MY VOCALS IN DIFFERENT WAYS...WHICH YOU GUYS ARE GONNA LOVE....Smile

You have quite a number of unreleased songs (one of which, the amaaazing All I Wanna Do, is a firm favourite amongst fans) - has it ever been difficult to release the material you wanted or have you always been happy with the control you've been given throughout your 17 year career?

I HAVE BEEN HAPPY WITH THE MAJORITY OF MY RELEASES...SOMETIMES IT CAN BE OUT OF YOUR CONTROL WHAT ENDS UP BEING A SINGLE,DUE TO DEMAND IE FROM A CLUB POINT ETC...BUT ALWAYS HAD A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH THE RECORD LABEL,WHERE I HAD ENOUGH CONTROL ETC....

What's the deal with N-Trance - are you guys all still friends or are you glad to have moved on 'forever' as it were? As a huge fan of yours, it was a bit embarassing to read a few comments from Kev regarding your I Will Love Again video where he said you looked like 'an old slag' - have you got him back yet?

YEAH STILL SPEAK TO THE N-TRANCE LADS...WAS IN IBIZA WITH EM LAST WEEK.....KEV AND I ARE COOL...WE HAVE WHAT YOU WOULD CALL A LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP LOL..ABIT LIKE SIBLINGS FALLING OUT!!!!...WHEN WE FELL OUT HE ALWAYS DECIDES TO WRITE HORRIBLE THINGS ABOUT ME OVER THE INTERNET,WHICH I AM USED TO NOW!!!LOL....SO IT JUST GOES OVER MY HEAD NOW!!!LOL...BUT YEAH,WE ARE ALL COOL....Smile

As well as having a really big voice, you're known for your love of golden fake tan and huge sunglasses, which your hardcore 'freakz' all love. Any top tanning tips or tanning catastrophes?

HA HA...I LOVE THIS QUESTION!!!!Hot smile.....YES IN THE PAST I HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO USE THE OLD FAKE TAN,BUT NOW I AM PLATINUM BLONDE THE TAN HAS BEEN KICKED TO THE CURB!!!..LOL...SO I AM AU NATUREL!!!..LOL...TANNING TIPS!!!! ALWAYS ADD A BIT OF MOISTURISER TO THE TAN WHEN DOING YOUR HANDS AND FEET!!!..LOL...TANNING CATASTROPHES!!!!OH YEAH!!! LOL....WHERE DO I BEGIN!!!...ONE TIME COMPLETLY FORGOT TO DO MY FACE AND HANDS!!!!...NOT A GOOD LOOK!!!..I THINK MOST OF US BOYS AND GIRLS HAVE HAD A FEW TANNING CATASTROPHES ALONG THE WAY!!!!..LOL...BUT SOOOO GLAD I HAVE DITCHED IT....SO NO MORE DODGY TAN LOOKS FOR ME YOU WILL BE PLEASED TO KNOW!!!!!LOL......AND YES I LOVE THE SUNGLASSES...WHO DOESNT???.....HA HA....Hot smile

Tell us some gossip about former label-mate Dannii Minogue... You both quite famously get called the 'Queen of Clubs'...

I HAVE ONLY MET DANNII A COUPLE OF TIMES OVER THE YEARS,AND SEEMED REALLY NICE...SO CANT REALLY COMMENT ON HER....I'VE REALLY LIKED SOME OF HER STUFF....SO NOTHING BAD TO SAY...SORRY...

What are your expectations for Freak Asylum?

BIG,BIG,BIG,BIG THINGS....YOU GUYS WILL LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!!...WE HAVE THE MOST AMAZING SONGS AND PEOPLE WORKING ON THIS ALBUM...WE ARE JUST IN THE PROCESS OF DECIDING THE FIRST SINGLE.....ITS BEEN ALONG TIME COMING.....AND IS GONNA BE WORTH THE WAIT!!!!...TRUST ME!!!.....THINK PINK,GWEN STEFANI ETC......I AM SO EXCITED FOR EVERYONE TO HEAR THIS!!!!!....AND I AM SOOOOOOO PROUD OF THIS!!!!!...GET READY FREAKZ!!!!!!!.....LET THE MADNESS BEGIN!!!!!!!

Why not just release the new music under Kelly Llorenna or even Kellz or Kellogs? Was there a feeling that you had to do something drastically different to get the results you needed?

HA HA...IT HAD TO BE A NEW START,SO NO-ONE HAD PRE CONCEPTIONS BEFORE THEY EVEN HEARD IT....COMPLETE NEW LOOK AND SOUND!!!!!...HENCE WHY I ALSO HAVE THE NAME LOLA LEETHAL AS MY ALTER EGO.....THIS IS NOT "ANOTHER KELLY DANCE SONG"...THIS IS A GREAT POP ALBUM.....WHICH I KNOW WILL SHUT A FEW PEOPLE UP!!!!...LOL...FREAK ASYLUM ROCK!!!!!!!!!!Winking smile

Tell It To My Heart was a massive solo top ten solo hit single for you. Did you feel pressured to repeat a formula in order to get the green light for future singles? Nobody Like You has more of a housey vibe to it, yet got scrapped after building up really favourable attention from fans...

YEAH NOBODY LIKE YOU WAS A BIG FAVOURITE WITH FANS,AND ME...BUT DUE TO BEHIND THE SCENES POLITICS,IT WAS A MUTUAL DECISION NOT TO RELEASE IT!!!!!...YOU OBVIOUSLY FEEL PRESSURE TO FOLLOW UP AFTER HAVING A TOP TEN,AND NOTHING IS GUARANTEED AS WE KNOW...

17 years in, what ambitions are left?

OOH LOADS!!!!!...I HAVE TOO MANY TO MENTION.....BUT WOULD LOVE A TOP 10 ALBUM,WORLD TOUR WITH FREAK ASYLUM..SO THATS A START!!!...LOL

Recently I heard a song called The Rain by Peter Luts that I thought had you singing on it. Has anyone ever tried to copy you or steal a track that you were after?

HA HA...YEAH THERES A FEW COPYCATS OUT THERESmile...BUT I TAKE IT AS A COMPLIMENT....AND YES!!!...THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW TRACKS THAT PEOPLE HAVE TRIED TO STEAL FROM ME,BUT WITH NO JOY!!!...LOL

And finally, would you ever do reality TV? It's kind of shocking that you have never been on Big Brother or Strictly Come Dancing...

HA HA...YEAH I HAVE BEEN APPROACHED FOR SOME REALITY SHOWS AND CAMEOS IN FILMS,SO WATCH THIS SPACE!!!!Smile

Amazing, right?
